Spring Landscaping Checklist

In Sydney we are fortunate to get wonderful weather for most of the year, especially on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The North Shore and Northern Beaches areas of Sydney are a haven for passionate gardeners. Living in these areas we love to have a beautiful landscaped garden to entertain with family and friends or to just enjoy to ourselves.

When you are ready to get out into the garden this Spring, here is a handy checklist of things to remember.

Spring Landscaping Checklist

Spring Landscaping Checklist

  1. Clear the lawn and garden of any dead sticks and branches that may have dropped through winter.

  2. Remove any dead branches from trees and shrubs you can reach. Get in the professionals for the ones you can't reach - no one wants an injury.

  3. You can leave the shrubs that may be flowering until they have stopped and then give them a prune to tidy up.

  4. Clear any drainage around the house yourself or get in the professionals if need be.

  5. Rake up all the leaves that may be piled up in the corners of your garden, on the lawn or your pathways.

  6. Patch in lawn to any areas that may have become bare through winter when the sun couldn't get through.

  7. Now is the time to begin weeding the lawn to get rid of clover and bindii.

  8. You are ready now to fertilise the lawn so that you get that wonderful darker green growth. (Don't forget to read the instructions depending on your lawn type)

  9. It is the perfect time to mulch the garden, top up areas or re cover all the garden beds. Remember not to cover the bases of your plants/trees. Instead build a well of mulch for wall to fill and disperse around the base of your plant. All your plants throughout your garden should be like this, not just trees as in the attached image.

  10. Fertilise your garden as you mulch to save time and don't forget to water in the fertiliser to your garden.

  11. Flower Beds - A trip to the nursery for all your wonderful annuals and perennials to make your entrance or special areas spring flower ready.

  12. Any perennials you have from previous years - now is a great time to divide them and spread them around your garden.

  13. Planting - It is a perfect time to plant: HERBS – sow basil, chives, coriander, dill, min, oregano, parsley, sage and thyme. FRUIT & VEGETABLES – Sow beans, beetroot, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, capsicum, cucumber, eggplant, endive, lettuce, melons, okra, onion, parsnip, potato, pumpkin, radish, rhubarb, rosella, silver beet, spring onion, squash, sweet corn, sweet potato, tomato and zucchini.

  14. Don't forget where you may have planted any bulbs back in summer/autumn as they will be getting ready to come up or they may already be appearing. (They are not weeds)

  15. Clean and wash your garden furniture, ready to use and if you have timber furniture it is the perfect time to re-stain.

  16. If you have any decking around the house, chances are it will be ready for staining by yourself or the professionals.

  17. Clean off the BBQ ready for use or get in the professionals to do it for you.

  18. Don't forget the house, your fly screens may need repair or replacement.
